The Apocalypse
I, and millions of others, am attempting to point out
the suicidal folly of deliberately increasing the birth rate of the affluent countries,
rather than welcoming the natural reduction in birth rate that comes with affluence
and education.
We should be attempting to spread this birth rate
reduction to all countries. Once this
happens we need to set a clear world target population that is not only
sustainable, but can adjust to changes in conditions.
Quixotic
This attempt sounds Quixotic, but we will succeed. I am also very optimistic that we will get our birth rate under control before the calvary arrives.
In the old Wild West movies, sometimes the cavalry
arrived to save the day. In this very
real life attempt, yes the cavalry is waiting to come.
We need to succeed before they
arrive.
The Calvary
In the real
world the cavalry is the
Four horsemen of the apocalypse.
Famine
If the world’s population keeps increasing it is only
a matter of time before we run out of food.
War
Human Beings are one of the few species that makes
war. Unfortunately we are very good at
making weapons. When the world runs out
of food, not all countries will be equally affected. Some countries will have starving people with powerful weapons and nothing to lose. We
will have wars. Not only about food, but
water shortages will also provoke war.
The wars will make the food shortages worse with
people busy killing each other rather than producing food. Services will be destroyed including the
supply of clean water and sanitation. We
will open the way for another horseman.
Pestilence
Historically huge numbers of people have been killed
by disease. The likelihood of major
outbreaks is increased by crowding and lack of food. The great plagues of earlier times would seem
trivial to what could happen in the future.
Death
Death is the forth horseman. Death is the natural end to life, but the premature deaths of billions of our
children and grandchildren because of our own stupidity now would be a tragedy of the first order.
Population
Growth
We can avoid bringing the first 3 horsemen by limiting
our population growth now. We do not need to do any extreme things like implimenting a one child policy.
We need to accept and encourage the natural fall in birth rate that was coming with prosperity and education.
